Why RomCom?
The bulk of my writing career has been spent in the world of historical romance. I love the gorgeous gowns and the alpha men, no electronics, no cars. I love the research. I love it all. And I was pretty successful as a historical romance author.
But what people want to read is very much cyclical and right now we’re in the modern RomCom era, which I also absolutely love.
About a year ago my husband and I went to a live performance of Lore. If you’ve never heard of Lore, it’s a podcast about…well…lore. Alan Menken is fantastic, weaving his stories of suspense and mystery. To see it live was exciting for us.
But when I came away from the performance, it wasn’t the stories of lores that he told in those two hours that had me thinking. It was the Q&A after. Mr. Menken has a composer who plays dramatic, suspenseful music during the storytelling and it was him that taught me something valuable (I wish I could remember his name).
He was asked about his music and he said, write to market. Once you have a following and are making it writing to market, then write what you want.
I had been writing to market when I was writing historical romance all those years ago. But the market has changed and RomCom, contemporary romance, is now in.
So I decided to switch it up, follow the market, and write a RomCom.
It wasn’t nearly as difficult as I thought it would be. In face, it was downright fun.
I’m a storyteller. I love telling oral stories just as much as written stories. But my oral stories always tend toward the humorous and I quickly realized that easily translated into my written story.
2000 Promises was born, and while there are funny parts to it, it is also a bit angsty, a bit sad, but also uplifting. And now I’m hooked on contemporary, RomCom, sweet romances (I’ll be honest, I’m not sure if this story is sweet because I can’t get a good definition. The s3x is behind closed doors. There’s hot kissing. And Danny has a dirty mouth. You’ve been warned)
My last three books have had “promise” in the title and so you can rightly assume that 2000 Promises is loosely (very loosely) tied to my Promise series. It’s the same family, but takes place 100 years later.
Don’t worry. There are more RomComs coming. Because I love writing them.
Also, be sure to check out the 2000 Promises playlist on Apple Music and Spotify.
